Vetiver Garland | Vetiver Malai

Vetiver malai (வெட்டிவேர் மாலை) is woven from the dried roots of the vetiver plant, known as khus in the north. It carries a cool, earthy, woody scent that strengthens rather than fades in humidity, which is why it is offered at temples and hung in homes through the hot months.

Choosing a length and style

1 to 2 feet suits a home pooja room idol. 3 to 5 feet is the usual choice for a larger deity or a function. 6 feet and above is generally ordered for temples and for utsavam. If you need a size outside the range, select custom and message us with the measurement before ordering.

The special design is more densely woven and more decorative; the general design is the plainer everyday weave.

How it is used

Offered to the deity at the temple or in the home pooja room, worn at weddings and functions, and hung indoors where the scent is wanted. Some households dampen it lightly to bring the fragrance forward in hot weather.

About the material

Vetiver root is a natural agricultural product. Colour, root thickness, weave density and the strength of the scent vary with the harvest and between garlands. The fragrance is strongest when new and softens over months; it revives noticeably when the garland is lightly dampened.

How long does the scent last?
It is strongest for the first few months and then softens, but does not disappear. Sprinkling a little water on the roots brings it back.

Which length do I need?
Measure your idol from the shoulders down and add a little. For a home pooja room 1 to 2 feet is usually right; temples order 6 feet and above.

Can I order a size not listed?
Yes — select custom and message us the length you need before placing the order.

How do I store it?
Hang it in a dry, airy place away from direct sunlight. Do not seal it in plastic, which traps moisture and causes it to mould.
