Sphadika mala

Sphatik (ஸ்படிகம்) is natural clear quartz, and the sphatik mala is the clear-bead counterpart to the darker woods used in japa. It is strung with 108 beads and is used both for counting mantras and for wear.

How it is used

For japa the beads are moved with the thumb and middle finger, the index finger traditionally kept away, and the meru bead is not crossed — the mala is turned around at that point instead. Sphatik is traditionally associated with Devi and Shiva worship, though practice differs by sampradaya; where your family or guru specifies otherwise, follow that.

About the material

Natural quartz. Clarity, faint internal veiling and tiny inclusions vary from bead to bead — a mala of completely flawless, identical beads is more likely to be glass than quartz. Sphatik beads are cool to the touch and noticeably heavier than wooden beads of the same size.

Questions

How can I tell quartz from glass?
Quartz is cooler to the touch, heavier, and usually shows faint internal veiling or small inclusions. Glass beads are uniformly clear and may contain round air bubbles, which quartz does not.

8mm or 10mm?
8mm is lighter and easier to wear under clothing. 10mm is easier to count with during japa and is the more usual choice if the mala is mainly for practice.

How do I clean it?
Rinse in plain water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid soap and harsh cleaners.

Can it be worn daily?
Yes. Remove it before bathing and heavy work, and take care not to knock the beads against hard surfaces — quartz chips.
