Which grade to choose

The three grades differ in how strongly they are scented. Javathu special carries the most fragrance, Javathu is the standard scented grade, and General is the plainest. Households that use vibuthi daily often keep the general grade for everyday and the special for festival days.

How it is used

Applied to the forehead, traditionally with the ring finger and in three horizontal lines in Shaiva practice, though the manner of application varies by sampradaya and by what your family follows. It is also offered at the shrine and distributed as prasadam.

About the material

Colour, texture and the strength of the fragrance vary between batches, as they do with any naturally scented preparation. Vibuthi takes up moisture quickly and will cake if the pack is left open in a humid place.
