Ruthuracham (ருத்ராட்சம்) is the seed of the rudraksha tree, worn in Shiva worship. These are single Indonesian beads, available from 1 to 12 mukhi, so you can choose the specific face count you have been advised to wear.

What mukhi means

Mukhi means face — the natural vertical clefts running down the surface of the seed. A 5 mukhi bead has five such lines. Each face count is traditionally associated in the texts with a different deity and quality, and lower counts such as 1, 2 and 3 mukhi are far less common in nature than 5 mukhi, which is why they cost more.

Which mukhi is appropriate to you is a question people usually take to an astrologer or their guru rather than decide alone, because the associations are specific and the traditions differ. We are happy to tell you what we have in stock, but we would not presume to tell you which one to wear.

About the material

Rudraksha is a natural seed. Size, colour depth, surface texture and the exact run of the mukhi lines vary between beads. Indonesian rudraksha are typically smaller and smoother than Nepali beads of the same face count. Beads darken with wear as they take up oil from the skin.

Questions

How do I count the mukhi myself?
Look at the bead under good light and count the vertical lines running from the top hole to the bottom. Each complete line from end to end is one mukhi. It is worth doing this on any bead you buy anywhere.

Why are 1, 2 and 3 mukhi so much more expensive?
They occur far less often on the tree. Five mukhi is by far the most common, which is why it is the most affordable and the most widely worn.

What is the difference between Indonesian and Nepali rudraksha?
Indonesian beads are generally smaller and smoother with finer lines; Nepali beads are larger and more deeply grooved. Both are genuine rudraksha; these are Indonesian.

How do I care for it?
Keep it dry, remove it before bathing and swimming, and oil it lightly with sesame oil every few months to stop the seed drying and cracking.
